Hail damage has a frustrating property: the storms that total a roof often leave it looking fine from the driveway. Shingles don't shatter like windshields — they bruise, and bruises are quiet. Here's how to tell whether the hail that rattled your windows last night actually hurt your roof, without climbing a ladder.
Start with the witnesses on the ground
The most reliable early evidence of roof-damaging hail isn't on the roof. It's on the softer, closer-to-eye-level metal around your property:
- Gutters and downspouts. Dings and dents in gutter metal mean the hail arrived with real energy. Gutters take the same hits your shingles did.
- A/C unit fins. Your condenser's thin aluminum fins dent at impact energies that also bruise shingles. Walk around the unit and look at the fins in raking light — dimpled fins after a storm are a strong signal.
- Fallen tree debris. Branches and twigs down in the yard mean the storm was violent enough to matter, and debris may have struck the roof on the way down.

What hail actually does to a roof
Up on the roof, hail damage to asphalt shingles usually looks like small dark bruises where impact knocked the protective granules loose and crushed the mat underneath. The spot may feel soft, like a bruise on fruit. The problem isn't cosmetic: granules are the shingle's UV armor, and New Mexico sun goes to work on every exposed spot. A bruised roof can shed water fine this season and fail early over the next several years — which is why damage worth documenting is worth documenting now, while the storm date is fresh.
Hail also dents soft metals up top — vents, flashing, evaporative cooler housings — and can crack older, sun-brittled shingles outright.
Why "it looks fine from the street" proves nothing
Bruising is small, scattered, and low-contrast. Even from a ladder at the eave, an untrained eye misses most of it. Assessing hail damage means walking the roof and reading impact patterns — which slopes took the wind-driven hail, whether the hits crushed the mat or just scuffed granules. That's a trained-eye job, and it's also a reason to be wary of anyone who "confirms" major damage from the sidewalk in ninety seconds.

One fine-print warning
